Having fun with my Bahamian friends

I have spent the past two spring breaks working on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. As a part of a 30-person team, I helped roof houses, repair school buildings and perhaps most enjoyably, entertain local children. Since I like traveling and meeting new people, time spent with the Bahamian kids was especially fun, and also because they are full of energy and share my love for playing games. Though I experienced a lifestyle different from my own, there were elements within the Bahamian culture that are present in every society, and I was able to share my perspective of an American lifestyle with the people on the island and gain a new understanding and appreciation for the easy going island way of life.

My Cultural Literacy Dictionary

1. AOI (Appearance of Impropriety): noun; used at Asbury Hills Camp and Retreat Center among counselors to suggest any behavior that would be inappropriate for young campers to witness
ex. Keep your hands to yourself at all times so as not to suggest any AOI!

2. The Woods: proper noun; the area of trees between Riggs and Holmes Halls on the west side of Clemson's campus

3. "tomorrow, but backwards": adjective phrase; used by younger sister to describe "the day before" when she could not think of the word "yesterday"

4. Blue Hat Gang: proper noun; hooligan group based in Chattanooga, Tenn. of the mid to late 1990s consisting of two brothers and cousin who would terrorize and annoy their sisters while each wearing a blue colored baseball cap

5. riff: a. adjective, slang; synonymous with "large amount" and used to express significance

ex. Maybe if I had studied the correct chapter that test wouldn't have been so riff hard.
